Fitness Write for Us: Most people believe that health and fitness are the same thing. Actually, they can be different physical states. You can be really healthy and not very healthy, and you can be very healthy or not very healthy. The best benefits are found when it comes to striking a balance on both sides, forcing us to see the difference between fitness and health.
So let’s define the difference. Health has been defined by the World Health Organization as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the nonappearance of disease or infirmity. These include good ageing, longevity, quality of life, freedom from pain, etc.
Definition of fitness
Conferring to the Centers for Disease Control and Inhibition, fitness defines as “the ability to perform daily tasks with vigor and awareness, without undue fatigue, and with sufficient energy to enjoy leisure time and respond to emergencies.” Based on this definition, fitness includes everything from standing up to walking to CPR.
To manage all these tasks, one must constantly consider one’s fitness level, which requires appropriate conditioning through structured exercise and recreational activities.
Fitness Fast Facts:
- Maintaining good physical condition can help prevent some medical conditions.
- Exercise can change body composition without changing weight.
- Athletes’ hearts show different changes depending on the chosen sport.
- Muscle strength increases due to fiber hypertrophy and neural changes.
- Stretching to increase flexibility can alleviate several medical problems.
What is Fitness, and who is Fit?
In 1997, Outside Magazine crowned triathlete Mark Allen the “Fittest Man Alive.” Let’s assume that this famous six-time Ironman triathlon winner is the fittest. So what title do we bestow on decathlete Simon Poelman, who also has incredible stamina and endurance, yet still crushes Mr. Allen in all comparisons related to strength, power, speed and coordination?
Perhaps the definition of physical fitness does not include strength, speed, power, and coordination, although that seems rather strange. Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary defines fitness as the ability to transfer genes and be healthy. There is no help there. Searching the Internet for a practical and sensible definition of fitness is disappointing. Worse yet, the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), the most respected publisher of exercise physiology, doesn’t even attempt to define a definition in their “Fundamentals of Strength Training and Conditioning.”
