Every Canon Lightsaber Colors In Star Wars

While the most common lightsaber colors in Star Wars are blue, red, and green, the Star Wars universe has a variety of captivating lightsaber colors to offer. Delving deeper into the lore, one can discover an array of unique hues that Jedi and Sith welders use to distinguish themselves.

Among the lesser-known lightsaber colors is purple, famously wielded by the esteemed Jedi Master Mace Windu. Its rarity symbolizes his exceptional prowess in both the light and dark sides of the Force. Additionally, yellow lightsabers signify a Jedi’s commitment to preserving knowledge and are often seen in the hands of Jedi Sentinels, who prioritize balance and diplomacy.

There are also intriguing lightsaber colors, such as silver, representing purity and spirituality. Amber-colored lightsabers evoke a sense of intuition and adaptability, reflecting the wielder’s versatility in combat. Some even speculate about white lightsabers, which indicate a deeper connection with the Force and remain often seen in the hands of those who have delved into all aspects of the Force.

While the blue, red, and green lightsabers remain iconic, the Star Wars universe showcases a rich tapestry of lightsaber colors embodying its characters’ diversity and complexity.

Lightsabers in the Star Wars galaxy aren’t only blue and red – they come in various colors, each carrying its unique meaning. Here are the different canon lightsaber colors found in Star Wars and their significance:

Blue Lightsaber

The most common color among Jedi lightsabers symbolizes loyalty and justice. Blue lightsabers remain usually wielded by Jedi Guardians, skilled in combat and defense.

Blue lightsabers represent righteousness and bravery, primarily by association with what the Jedi stand for and the user’s strong “spiritual alignment” with the crystal. This color remained used by characters like Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, Luke Skywalker, and Count Dooku (before he fell to the Dark Side). This color is designated to a Jedi Guardian in Star Wars Legends, once again mirroring the Star Wars prequel trilogy.

Red Lightsaber

Associated with the Sith and the dark side of the Force, red lightsabers represent aggression, power, and fear. Sith lightsabers are often crafted by bleeding a Kyber crystal, giving them their distinct crimson hue. Of all lightsaber colors, red lightsabers iconically and unquestionably represent the Sith and the dark side.

Unlike the Jedi, who share a joining with their Kyber crystals, the Sith cannot forge this unseen bond and thus have to steal their Kybers or employ other means to build their lightsabers.

The process is known as “bleeding” and involves pouring all their hate, fear, and negative feelings into the crystal, causing it to “bleed” and turn red. Conversely, in Star Wars Legends, the Sith similarly couldn’t use Kyber crystals for their lightsabers, so they made synthetic Kybers.

Which turned out to be red. This color has been primarily used by the Sith, as seen with Darth Vader, Count Dooku, Darth Sidious, Kylo Ren, and Darth Maul’s infamous double-bladed lightsaber.

Green Lightsaber

Jedi Consulars frequently utilize green lightsabers, signifying their focus on diplomacy, knowledge, and harmony. Green lightsabers remain commonly seen among Jedi who excel in healing and negotiation.

The second most common color the Jedi use is green lightsabers. Closely associated with harmony, helpfulness, cooperation, spirituality, and demonstrable goodwill. Canonically, the green lightsaber remained commonly used by wiser, senior Jedi, such as Yoda, and Qui-Gon Jinn. And Luke Skywalker before the sequels.

In Star Wars Legends, green lightsabers designate a Jedi Consular, but this fact hasn’t been alluded to heavily in Disney’s canon. A Jedi Consular is a Jedi more devoted to the mental aspects of the Force than lightsaber combat.

Purple Lightsaber

A rare color, purple lightsabers indicate a Jedi who possesses a balance between the light and dark sides of the Force. Mace Windu’s purple lightsaber signifies his unique fighting style and connection to the Force.

Yellow Lightsaber

Reserved for Jedi Sentinels, yellow lightsabers are wielded by those skilled in information gathering, stealth, and investigation. Jedi Sentinels often serve as the Order’s detectives and spies.

This color remains almost exclusively used by Jedi Temple guards. Who carries double-bladed yellow lightsaber pikes? Little is known about this particular lightsaber color, so whether these remain intentionally yellow to distinguish the guards or the crystal chooses the temple guards by turning yellow is currently unclear.

Other characters, such as Asajj Ventress and Ahsoka, have also wielded this lightsaber color at some point. Most notably, Rey Skywalker wields a yellow lightsaber after defeating Palpatine at the end of Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker.

White Lightsaber

White lightsabers are distinctive as their color remains achieved through a bleeding crystal purification process. This color represents the Jedi’s allegiance to neither the dark nor light side. But rather a desire to eliminate corruption and restore balance.

Ahsoka Tano primarily used white lightsabers, proving her mastery of the Force. Ahsoka retrieved these unique Kyber crystals from the lightsaber of the Sixth Brother. An Inquisitor she killed during the Imperial profession of Raada while hiding after the Jedi Order collapsed.

These initially emitted a red blade, but Ahsoka purified them with the Force and restored them to white, representing her status as an autonomous individual. She was no longer affiliated with the Jedi and had no affinity to the dark side. Ahsoka used these new white crystals in two lightsabers, one of which was a shorter Shoto blade.

Orange Lightsaber

Rarely seen, orange lightsabers suggest a Jedi seeking enlightenment and knowledge by exploring and uncovering ancient secrets. Jedi with orange lightsabers often have a solid connection to the Force’s mystical aspects.

One of the newer editions to the Star Wars canon is the orange lightsaber. A selectable option in Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor. Additionally, orange lightsabers remain wielded by the mysterious villains Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati in the Ahsoka series. As of now, not much is known about what orange lightsabers mean in Star Wars canon.

However, in Star Wars Legends, the Sith and dark-aligned Jedi have sometimes used orange blades. Like Mace Windu’s purple edge treading dangerously close to the dark side. Skoll and Hati’s orange sabers may indicate they aren’t entirely aligned with the Sith.

Other Colors

While less common, there have been instances of lightsabers in colors such as black, silver, and even gold. These unique colors may represent individuals who have forged their path and ideology within the Force.

Remember, these colors and their meanings are just a glimpse into the rich lore of lightsabers in the Star Wars universe. The choice of lightsaber color for a Jedi or Sith can further showcase their individuality, beliefs, and journey within the Force.
